WHY STUDY IMPROVISATION?
WHAT IS IMPROVISATION?
In comedy, music, dance and theater, performers create original work without a script. In many cases, the improvisation is based on a previously created work. Musicians will improvise solos based on the primary theme of the song. In theater, actors will use improvisation to develop characters. Directors and choreographers and writers will use improvisation to develop new text and movements. For any artist, improvisation is a valuable tool to create original and interesting new works.
THE ART of IMPROVISATION
Made popular to younger generations by the TV show “WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY” many performers choose to improvise an entire performance. Some create entire plays (10-120 minutes) based on one suggestion (known as LONG FORM IMPROV). Others create smaller sketches and play theater games (known as SHORT FORM IMPROV). Artists are constantly developing new ways to present improvisation that entertains, challenging themselves and the audience.
WHY STUDY IMPROVISATION?
If you have any desire to be a professional artist, performer or writer, Improvisation will give you in valuable skills to create and perform. There is no better way to overcome writers block and to break the cycle of “The same old thing.”
But even if a career as an actor, comedian or musician is the farthest from your mind, many of the skills we teach in Improvisation are key and will give you an edge for almost any professional career. Politicians, Doctors, Teachers, Real Estate Agents, Stock Brokers, Business Managers, Customer Service, Sales Staff, Social Workers, Police and so many more all have the need to deal with people one-on-one and/or giving presentations to a crowd.
Improvisation gives you skills to better communicate your thoughts, the confidence to speak your mind and the skills to work on and/or lead a team.
CAREERS IN IMPROVISATION
There are a number of paying jobs out there for the career improviser. To be honest, very few find the ability to earn a living by just performing. But there are many ways to earn an income from developing these valuable skills. Here are a few and some basics to get your foot in the door.
PERFORMER: There are two ways to perform. Start your own show or audition for an established company. In some cases companies require you take their classes as every Improv Troupe has there own style. In many cases, four to six friends will start their own troupe. Every town has venues you can use to put on a show. (A future blog will discuss producing your own show). Improvisers are a commodity. As rehearsals are becoming more and more brief, produces and directors need talent that can show up ready to work. Often times there is no rehearsal on TV and Commercial sets. You show up for a costume fitting. You may have five minutes with a director and – BAM – you are shooting. You will get to do a few takes, but time is money. Film costs money. Too many takes and the editor has a more difficult job finding the best one. (NOTE: A take is each time you shoot the same scene/moment. Directors LOVE “one-take wonders” – actors that nail it the first time around. You will usually do an extra take for “safety.”)
IMPROV TEACHER: Again, you can start your own company or teach through an agency. Make sure you have a little experience under your belt before you think you are ready to teach. The best way to become a great teacher is to find a professional working teacher to be your mentor. Become a teacher’s assistant. Learn as much as you can. The best thing about teaching, you really become a better performer working with others. Hearing yourself say things you have heard teachers tell you makes everything make that much more sense. You will understand this after your first course teaching. Schools, Community Centers (YMCA etc), and other hire teacher to run programs. Some programs are MASTER CLASSES (One time sessions). Others are progressive classes (Multiple sessions meant to build upon the each other). Teachers need to know the material as well as know how to manage a class.
CORPORATE TRAINER: In addition to hiring entertainers, big corporations and small businesses both hire Improvisation trainers to run teambuilding events. Playing Improv Games and running exercises gets teams of laughing and playing as well as working together to complete a challenge. And these workshops are great for all areas of business – Sales, Service, and Management. Communication is an important part of a productive work place. Beyond the fun – the comedy – Improvisation can be used to attack serious communication issues – mostly conflict resolution. We have teams discuss serious issues, act out some scenarios and the follow up with major discussion. These sessions rarely solve all the problems, but they always get a team talking about what is most important, and serve as a launching pad for further problem-solving discussion.
COMEDY WRITER: Any writer should use Improvisation to develop original work. Many of the top TV writers are from the Improvisation World. Apply to be an intern on Letterman, Conan or similar talk show. Write and perform stand-up comedy or work with an Improv troupe to develop your material. Many of the top comics worked as writers for other comics before making a name for them.
